Mrs. Vergie Mae Welcome

Vergie Mae Isaac Welcome February 25, 1948-May 18, 2024 Vergie Mae Isaac Welcome, aka “Nanny,” was born in Alexandria (Pineville), Louisiana, to the proud parents Viola and Clarence Isaac. She was one of fourteen children, between both parents, Johnny Jack, Rodney Jack, Clara Jacobs, Clifford Isaac, Sandra Davis, L.D. Davis, Jr., Clarence Isaac, Jr., Jaqueline Isaac Carvins, Yvonne Isaac Chambers, Carl Isaac, Alvin Louis, Christopher, and Debra Isaac. Vergie spent her formative years as a tomboy in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She hung with her brothers a lot and could do everything they could do, including fight for them. She attended Washington High School, where she met and later married Samuel L. Welcome, Sr. After giving birth to their daughter, Tammy, they moved to Houston for better job opportunities. A son, Samuel L. Welcome, Jr. came a year later. She saved the best for last when she gave birth to her daughter, Shatara Welcome Mosley, five years later. Vergie spent over 35 years in Kashmere Gardens raising her beautiful family. She believed in education and ensured it was the number one topic of conversation with her children. She attended Houston Community College. She worked at NASA as a Personnel Specialist and was named to The Marquis Who’s Who in the South and Southwest 1980/1981. Simultaneously, Vergie was able to get certified as a Teacher’s Aide, through testing. She worked for the Mental Health Mental Retardation Association as a job coach. She trained mentally challenged youth and adults in developing job skills to become employable and contribute to society. She also received commendations from the Houston Mayor’s Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities. She trained and facilitated the employment of many and was recognized as a Distinguished American during her tenure. She was a good member in standing of the National Rehabilitation Association for years. Like a chameleon, Vergie was comfortable and well-versed in any setting, whether meeting high-level civil rights leaders (Dr. Andrew Young, Jessie Jackson, Paul Whitfield) or trash-talking with neighborhood friends. She was full of life and energy, often leaving her children shaking their heads. She was the young adult and they were the parents. Her outer beauty was evident. What made her super special was her inner beauty, fearlessness, self-confidence, self-assuredness, and ability to make you feel like you could achieve anything. She was smart, witty, and had a wicked sense of humor. She always had a comeback and freely shared her thoughts. Family meant the most to Vergie and she would do any and everything to guide them, protect them, and purely love them unconditionally. Vergie enjoyed traveling, taking trips to the casino, having a great time with family and friends, listening to rhythm and blues, zydeco dancing, gospel music, playing cards and dominoes on the porch, socializing with friends, and cooking meals that almost made you slap your momma (literally). Vergie is preceded in death by her mother Viola Davis, father Clarence Isaac Sr., and siblings: Johnny Jack, Rodney Jack, Clara Jacobs, Clifford Isaac, and Yvonne Isaac Chambers. She leaves behind her three devoted children Tammy Welcome-Brown (Eric), Samuel L. Welcome Jr. (Kiyona), and Shatara Mosley (Jarrod), seven grandchildren Shar’Dae Posey, Shamere Welcome, SharDranique Welcome, Alexzandria Johnson, Brandon Welcome, Mi’Kayla Mosley, and Jordan Mosley, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends that will dearly miss her.
