Joyce Jeletta Grant

Joyce Jeletta (McNairn) Grant was born on August 21, 1932, in Kingston, Jamaica W.I. to the union of Samuel Augustus McNairn and Ruth Ann Isabel (Smith) McNairn. She peacefully transitioned to her eternal resting home on December 7, 2022, after succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease. In her early twenties, Joyce moved from Jamaica to Great Britain and became a beautician. From there she immigrated to Washington, D.C. and later married Alfred L. Grant on July 19, 1958. To this union of 36 years, four children were born. After the birth of their first child, daughter Carol, the family moved back to Jamaica in 1961 where daughter Marcia and twin sons Karl and Maurice were born. Now a devoted mom of four children under age four, Joyce became a full-time homemaker. In 1968, the family returned to the United States. Work assignments took them from MD to NY, TX, VA and back to TX. Joyce was the glue that held the family together through all their many adventures while maintaining continuity at home. Joyce made lifelong friendships everywhere the family lived. She was definitely a people person, who found ways to network while being a stay-at-home mom that included selling Avon, Tupperware and lingerie. After putting her career on hold to raise a family, Joyce went back to beauty school, graduated from Modern Beauty College, Houston, TX in December 1976 and re-entered the workforce fulfilling her initial ambition. By 1982, Joyce proudly opened her own beauty salon, The Personal Touch in Humble, TX. There she flourished as a successful entrepreneur and cosmetologist specializing in hair color and precision haircuts with a very loyal clientele until retirement in 1994. Joyce had a passion for gardening, painting, bowling, travelling, cooking, entertaining and playing slot machines at the casino. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. The last member of her immediate family, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Ruth McNairn; siblings: Noel G. Hannam, Edna L. (McNairn) Lee and Winston F. McNairn. Joyce leaves to cherish her memories four children: Carol G. Gray (Ernest), Marcia E. Barnett, Karl A. Grant (Veronica), Maurice W. Grant (Nicole); eight grandchildren: Donavon and Avery Gray, Devon and Jazmin Grant, Sophia, Natalie and Trevor Grant, Jessica Barnett; one great grandson: Donavon Gray, Jr. along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
